RESTING - A pair of Ring-necked Ducks tuck their heads and rest on the water. Ducks frequently sleep on the water to stay safe from land predators. To stay safe they can sleep with one eye open and half their brain alert, a behavior called unihemispheric sleep.

COLORFUL WOODY - The male Wood Duck is the most striking of the waterfowl that return to rivers and ponds in New England in the Spring. This Woody was with his mate on the Contoocook River in Peterborough, NH. The Contoocook is one of only a few rivers that flow in a predominantly northward direction.

FANTASTIC - Tom Turkeys fan their tails primarily as a courtship display to attract females during the Spring breeding season. This behavior, known as strutting, involves puffing feathers and showcasing their tail fan to appear larger and more attractive.
