COMING IN LATE - A male Goldfinch feeds a fledgling. Goldfinches preferred food is seed from thistle and summer flowers and they wait to have their chicks late in the season to insure that there are plenty of seeds to feed their chicks.

STRIKING - It is hard as a nature photographer not to have a bias for colorful birds...and I will pretty much always shoot a Cardinal when one is in range of my lens.

HERE FOR THE CHERRIES - An immature Cedar Waxwing approaches a scant cherry crop. Waxwings eat mainly fruit, and live an itinerant life, moving continuously in search of fruit. They will stay in an area only as long as the fruit lasts. Cherries are almost gone on the trees in our yard - so we won't be seeing Waxwings much longer.

HANGING AROUND - A male Rudy-throated Hummingbird guards a feeder on the patio from a perch under the Kiwi shrub. Male hummingbirds are the first to arrive in Spring and the first to head out on migration. It won't be long before this little fella heads south.

LIFTOFF - A male Cardinal launches from a perch in the wisteria. While we typically see Cardinals at feeders eating seeds - this guy grabbed a bug almost immediately. (second photo below)
