GOOD PROVIDER -  A Robin with a beak full of worms on perch near the nest. David Sibley says a single Robin can eat up to 14 feet of earthworms a day. We have seen at least two chicks in the Robin nest - and both parents are hunting worms non-stop.

A MOM BLANKET - A Heron crouches over her very young chicks on an unusually cold June day. Heron chicks are born nearly naked, so until they grow feathers they need protection from the cold.

THAT PROVERBIAL EARLY BIRD - A Robin fills its beak with worms and grubs hunting in the yard to feed the chick(s?) in the nest under the solar array. We notice both parents hunting constantly to take food back to the nest.

SLIPPERS ARE OUT - We have been watching for Lady Slipper blooms - and finally spotted one near the beaver pond. The Pink Lady Slipper, Cypripedium acaule, was designated as New Hampshire's state wildflower in 1991. Lady Slippers - also called Moccasin Flower - is a woodland orchid.

PURPLE ? FINCH - The state bird of New Hampshire - the Purple Finch - is actually not purple, but the males are mostly red. The scientific name, Carpodacus purpureus, refers to the reddish-purple hue, not the modern definition of the color purple. The word "purpureus" in Latin means "crimson" or other reddish colors, which is closer to the color of the bird.
