PURPLE ? FINCH - The state bird of New Hampshire - the Purple Finch - is actually not purple, but the males are mostly red. The scientific name, Carpodacus purpureus, refers to the reddish-purple hue, not the modern definition of the color purple. The word "purpureus" in Latin means "crimson" or other reddish colors, which is closer to the color of the bird.
