OFFA' MY FLOWER - A female Ruby-throated Hummingbird chases a Fritillary Butterfly away from the Cimicifuga bloom she has taken a liking to. The Hummingbirds are bulking up for migration and are very protective of their favorite flowers and feeders.

STILL ENJOYING THE HUMM - The female Hummingbirds are all over the late-Summer blooming flowers (because the males have already left). Hummingbirds eat about half their body weight in nectar and insects daily. The Hummingbirds at our house seem to working toward that goal - this one on a late blooming Cimicifugeae (sometimes called "bugbane").

BIG WOODPECKER -  A female Pileated Woodpecker perches at the very top of a dead spruce tree. The largest North American woodpecker, Pileated Woodpeckers, have experienced a surge in population in recent years. We have a resident pair (the male has a red mustache) that we see somewhat frequently - but we hear them much more often, and ALWAYS before we see them.

SIP AND TILT - Birds drink by scooping water into their beaks and tilting their heads back to let gravity pull the water down their throats. The female cardinal drinks from the bird bath with just a little spill. ;-)

SUNFLOWER DAY - A Fritillary Butterfly takes advantage of a sunflower bloom in the garden on the roof. Fritillary Butterflies do not typically migrate - and some in colder climate may not survive the winter and depend on repopulation from warmer regions.
