DOWNY SOFT - A male Downy woodpecker at the suet feeder. A Downy woodpecker is called "Downy" because of the soft, down-like texture of the white feathers on its lower back - which contrasts with the more "hair-like" feathers of its larger, look-alike relative, the Hairy woodpecker.

DRIP DRINKS - A Chickadee drinks drips from a large icicle hanging from a maple tree branch. It was just warm enough for the icicle to give up a drip every 10 minutes or so - and the Chickadees would be elsewhere until a drop showed up on the end of the icicle.

TRUE COLORS - Wild Turkeys displaying bright, iridescent feathers. Iridescent feathers are feathers that display shimmering colors that change depending on the angle of the light. This phenomenon is called structural coloration and occurs when light hits what are known as photonic crystals, which make the light refract, or change its angle.
