DOWNY SOFT -  A male Downy woodpecker at the suet feeder. A Downy woodpecker is called "Downy" because of the soft, down-like texture of the white feathers on its lower back - which contrasts with the more "hair-like" feathers of its larger, look-alike relative, the Hairy woodpecker.

Nice GAB photo.
I don't know how you get these closeups.

"the soft, down-like texture of the white feathers on its lower back" sounds like a fancy way of saying Downys are Fluffy Butts (as opposed to the slightly larger species, the Hairy Butt), and I will henceforth adopt these names for them!
