MOTHERLY LOVE - Female Downy Woodpecker (left) feeds a chick from the suet feeder. Woodpeckers are reliable breeders that teach their young where to find food and how to get it.

GET CRACKIN' - A male Cardinal demonstrates his seed shell cracking ability. Birds that eat seeds, like finches and cardinals, have strong, cone-shaped beaks that are built for cracking. They crack the seed shells by precisely positioning the seed, applying force with their beaks, and sometimes using a tongue and jaw movement for leverage.

MINI ME - Eastern Cottontail Rabbit with offspring in the neighbors' yard. Lots of bunnies around this year.

SUMMER CLEANUP - A male yellow-bellied Sapsucker preens. Preening removes dirt, bugs and helps align feathers for optimum position and shape for their bodies. They also have a gland that deposits a waterproof oil on their feathers when they preen.

HERON CHICKS ARE FLEDGING - Some of the Heron chicks are flying. Since they don't all hatch at the same time, it is common for some chicks to be bigger - and fledge earlier - leaving stragglers in the nest alone.
