TRYIN' TO LOOK MY BEST - A male Heron preens near the nest he claimed - as herons return to the beaver pond for nesting season. His mate was hunkered down on the nest nearby.

ORANGE YOU GLAD - A male Red-bellied Woodpecker at an orange in a suet feeder. We put out oranges to attract Orioles in the Spring - then we learned that woodpeckers (which are year-round residents) like oranges, too. So, we feed the woodpeckers oranges all winter.

SOFT LANDING - Herons are choosing nests on the beaver pond, with males staking claims on the existing nests.

FLASHY MALE - The male Wood Duck is a product of evolution and female choice. The male plays no role in raising the young, so a female chooses a mate based largely on his attractiveness. Over millions of generations, as females continually choose males that stand out from the flock, the process can lead to strikingly beautiful birds like the Wood Duck. This pair was cruising the beaver pond.

PUNK DO - A female Common Merganser with an un-common hair-do. Mergansers are diving ducks - which is not good for keeping a stylish coif.
