WOODPECKER BIGLY - A female Pileated Woodpecker prepares to attack the bark on pine tree stump. The eight year old stump is home to grubs and beetles the woodpecker likes. Pileated Woodpeckers have experienced a population surge in recent years, but still occur at low density...making it a pleasure for birders to see (and me to photograph).

HERON CHICKS GROW FAST - Chicks in one of the Heron nests on the beaver pond are big enough to be seen over the side of the nest. Great Blue Heron chicks often take their first flight around 8 weeks and most are considered fully fledged and ready to depart the nest at about 90 days (roughly 13 weeks).

JELLY! - A male Red-bellied Woodpecker chows down on grape jelly at the Oriole feeder. Many bird species visit Oriole feeders for jelly, which mimics the high-sugar fruit they find in nature. Common "jelly birds" are Catbirds, Grosbeaks Tanagers, Finches and Woodpeckers (as we saw!).

MY LADY'S SLIPPER - Spotted the first (only) Pink Lady's Slipper wildflower next to the beaver pond. Cypripedium acaule (Pink Lady's Slipper) was historically used by Native Americans and in 19th century medicine for its sedative, antispasmodic and analgesic properties.
