HISTORIC - In honor of Woman's History Month. In May 1977, I took this photograph of Janet Guthrie the moment she came off the track after becoming the first woman ever to qualify to compete in the Indianapolis 500. Guthrie, who will turn 86 tomorrow, was also the first woman to compete in the Daytona 500. She went on to race in three Indy 500s and 33 NASCAR events over four seasons and was the first woman to lead a lap in a NASCAR race.
