MAKE YOUR MARK - A Black Bear enjoying a good scratch on a marking tree near our yard. Black Bears mark trees by clawing and rubbing their backs to deposit scent that other bears investigate. Bears need to shed their winter coats before summer gets too hot, so rubbing on trees also helps loosen the longer winter coat and shed it.

Ahhhhhhhh. Feels so good!!

You are extremely lucky to be able to witness this. I've seen trees that bears have marked by rubbing or chewing, but never a photo of one doing it. Thank you!
