SQUIRREL MUNCHIES - A Red Squirrel munches Samaras (the seed helicopters from maple trees) in our yard. We think of Squirrels as eating only nuts - but they are carnivores and will eat meat and plants...but seem to be enjoying the abundance of maple seeds in the tree this year.

TINY CHICK - David Sibley describes the Great Blue Heron, at nearly four feet tall, as the tallest bird most people will see. In an amazing annual display of nature - tiny Heron chicks (look for it at the bottom of the frame) will be nurtured in this nest until they are adult size.

HERON CHICKS GROWING - Chicks in the Heron nests are getting big enough to be seen in the nest. I've seen chicks in two of the four active nests on the beaver pond...this chick is only a few days old.

OH DEER - The grass in our yard (could not be called a lawn) is greening up faster than most of the forest plants - which attracted this young deer out of the woods.

HONKED OFF - Canada Geese do a lot of honking. They honk primarily to communicate with their flock - alerting the flock to potential threats, to locate other geese or to claim an end of the beaver pond. This goose was honking because I was sitting near the bank watching Heron nests.
