SNOW PODS - Milkweed seed pods...having long since released their airborne seeds, collect snow in the pollinator garden.

EARLY HOLIDAY TREAT - A Downy Woodpecker enjoys the seed cake that was an early Christmas present (to us ;-)...Our family knows that treating the birds is a gift to us!

LONG SHADOWS - Shadows stretch across the beaver pond. Shadows are longer near the winter solstice (Dec. 21st) because Earth's axial tilt causes the sun to appear lowest in the sky, hitting the ground at a shallow angle, making shadows stretch out dramatically.

FOREST SUNSET -Approaching the winter solstice the sunset is earlier every day. The winter solstice occurs when Earth's tilt causes one pole to be farthest from the sun. It signifies a turning point, as after this moment, daylight hours gradually begin to lengthen - symbolizing the return of light celebrated by cultures worldwide.
