BUTTERFLY KING - A male Monarch Butterfly on a Sedum bloom. Monarchs are one of a few butterfly species that migrate south. Butterflies drink nectar from flower blooms and like Hummingbirds, bulk up before migration.

WATCHING - An Eastern Phoebe watches the yard from a perch - before spotting a prey insect that it will catch while in flight. Phoebes are small flycatchers that arrive early in New Hampshire in Spring and are late to migrate in the Fall. Since Phoebes generally return to the exact same nesting site and frequently use the same nest year after year - we consider them our Phoebes.

SEED CRACKER - A Tufted Titmouse cracks a seed holding it with its feet. Several small perching birds (Titmouse, Chickadees and Blue Jays) hold seeds with their feet while hammering or cracking them open with their beaks. While Finches and Cardinals eat right in the feeder and leave their seed shells behind.

Starting molt - A female Northern Cardinal looks a little rough at the start of the fall molt. During Fall molt Cardinals can look scruffy or unkempt, but it is a completely normal and healthy process.
