HEY BUNNY - The Eastern Cottontail Rabbit that is hanging around our yard gives a wave (or scratches its face).  We love having cute critters around - but someone is eating the Mum blooms on the patio - and the bunny is a suspect.

MIGRATION LOOK - A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak stops at a feeder in our yard at the start of his migration.  Unlike many other migratory birds, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks frequently start their autumn migration while their flight feather molt is still underway. The adult males lose their sharp black-and-white breeding plumage, acquiring brown edges on their feathers and looking somewhat patchy and ragged before heading south to Central and South America.

STOPOVER - An immature Yellow-bellied Sapsucker stops in our yard during migration. Juvenile Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers migrate through New Hampshire in Fall as they head south from their breeding grounds.

FUNGUS AMONG US - Birds that come to our feeders have either migrated or are in the forest getting abundant natural food...but warm, wet Fall days have brought out the fungi. This looks like a mushroom in the Amanita Family - guidebook says deadly poisonous. I don't know my mushrooms - and don't eat wild mushrooms due to the lack of mushroom knowledge.

LATE SUMMER BATH - A Tufted Titmouse stirs up water in the bird bath. Late Summer and early fall mark the end of the annual molt, where birds shed old feathers and grow fresh ones. Regular bathing helps them clean and align the new feathers.
