MIGRATION LOOK - A male Rose-breasted Grosbeak stops at a feeder in our yard at the start of his migration. Unlike many other migratory birds, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks frequently start their autumn migration while their flight feather molt is still underway. The adult males lose their sharp black-and-white breeding plumage, acquiring brown edges on their feathers and looking somewhat patchy and ragged before heading south to Central and South America.
