PASSING  THROUGH - After days of not seeing any hummingbirds - we had a female at the feeder. We keep our feeders up and filled after "our" hummers leave... for the stragglers.

STYLING - This Northern Flicker might know polka dots are in style this Fall. The Northern Flicker is actually a woodpecker, but unlike other woodpeckers it mostly hunts its favorite food - ants on the ground.

EAGLE ON THE BEAVER POND - We have been seeing Eagles on the beaver pond for a few years now - after many years never seeing one. With a life expectancy of 15-30 years - it is likely we are seeing the same Eagles year after year.

Correction: I was excited to find a rare plant - white gentian - for yesterdays POTD...but thanks to Shelby Perry (Wildlands Ecology Director at Northeast Wilderness Trust) I know the photo in yesterdays POTD was of White Turtle Head (Chelone Glabra) blooms. White Turtle Head was used in Native American medicine for its anti-parasitic, digestive and anti-inflammatory properties.

WHITE GENTIAN - We look for Closed Bottle Gentian blooms this time of year - purple, balloon-shaped blossoms. We know where some are - and can usually find them each Fall. This year we ran across White Gentian, Gentiana alba, which is listed as rare, endangered or threatened in much of it's range. In traditional medicine texts, Gentiana's various preparations were effective treatment for several disorders - including animal poisoning, infected wounds and sprains of muscles. This is the first time we have seen White Gentian in our woods.
