POTD 8/19/26
DOVELY - A Mourning Dove with broad shoulders from this angle. I don't think this Dove was sleeping, but David Sibley says Doves (and other birds) can sleep with one eye open and can actually put half of their brain to sleep while continuing activity with the other half.

JUST A LITTLE EARLY - A female Ruby-throated Hummingbird checks out a flower that is almost a bloom.

SOLAR POWERED - An Eastern Phoebe hunts bugs from the edge of the solar array. Phoebes are in the Flycatcher family - and all insect-eating birds are more than welcome in our yard.

FROM BOTH SIDES NOW - Cloud reflections in the beaver pond. Cumulus clouds - the low puffy, fair-weather kind, I like to call "photo clouds" for the way they enhance photographs - always make me think of Joni Mitchell's song and I really don't know clouds at all.

BUM LEG - An immature Chipping Sparrow with a deformed leg. Several sources said birth defects in wild sparrows were rare and that most deformities were the result of injury. This little sparrow seemed to be getting around pretty well.
