ON OUR WAY TO A WHITE CHRISTMAS - A male Downy Woodpecker dodges the snowflakes bringing a white Christmas to New Hampshire. A little snow just in time for Christmas.

WINTER SKY - The Winter Solstice marks the beginning of astronomical winter, the shortest day of the year, but not necessarily when we feel winter starts. Meteorologists define winter by calendar months (Dec.-Feb.) - and some cultures see the Winter Solstice as marking midwinter.

WINTER SOLSTICE SUNRISE - Sunrise is actually a little later for a few weeks after the winter solstice. Even though the day length increases, the earliest sunset happens before the solstice, leading to the confusing overlap due to the earth's tilted orbit and our clocks. The shortest day is the solstice, but the latest sunrise occurs in early January.
