LOVEY DOVEY - A male Mourning Dove follows close behind his female mate. Mourning Doves are sometimes called "turtle doves" due to colonists confusing them with the European turtle dove. The name "turtle" is derived from the Latin turtur, an onomatopoeia for the bird's purring "tur-tur call and unrelated to the reptile. Both doves are known for their mournful-sounding, gentle calls and they share a reputation for being symbols of love and devotion, often pairing for life.
