HOWDY DOWNY - A male Downy Woodpecker visits a black oil sunflower feeder. Downy Woodpeckers are a lookalike of the larger Hairy Woodpecker. Recent research supports the idea that the smaller species can benefit when other birds mistake it for the larger species. But the lookalike species cause frequent identification challenges for backyard birders. (The Hairy Woodpecker has a longer bill!)
