THAT TAIL - A male Red-bellied woodpecker uses his tail to brace on a platform feeder. Woodpeckers use their stiff, strong tail feathers as a third leg to brace themselves against trees (or a feeder). This prop gives them leverage and provides stability, allowing them to maneuver on vertical surfaces or feed from feeders.
