DEFENSIVE POSTURE - A Heron chick stretches out to mimic it's surroundings. According to David Sibley, in birds of the Ardeidae family (which includes Herons), unprotected nestlings will assume a "bittern stance". extending their necks, mimicing the nest site they inhabit. I am seeing this behavior with the Heron chicks on the nest on the beaver pond with eagles being frequent visitors.
