SCRATCH THAT ITCH - A male Ruby-throated Hummingbird gets at an itch. The male's iridescent red throat is only brightly colored when viewed from straight on.  The iridescent color is produced by the microscopic structure of the feather's surface and gives the male hummingbird an extremely directional signal, visible only to the object of his attention.
