PURPLE? FINCH - The New Hampshire State bird - the Purple Finch - is not actually purple. Why? The species name, purpureus, comes from Latin and means "crimson" or other reddish color. Our word "purple" meaning a color obtained from mixing red and blue, also derives from the Latin purpurpeus. The male Purple Finch is actually a crimson colored Finch and the female has no red at all.

I have them at my feeder at this time, but they seem smaller. :)
