PICKY EATER - Chickadee with a black sunflower seed. Chickadees, unlike some other small birds (like finches) can't eat sitting at the feeder and  need to take their seed to a branch to crack open the seed to eat it. Because of the energy required to leave the feeder to eat the seed, Chickadees are very particular about which seed they choose. This Chickadee picked up several seeds before settling on the heaviest one to take to the branch to crack.

I watch blue jays lift several peanuts till they find the right one. Same is true of the titmouse.
