ON THE NEST -  Great Blue Herons usually nest in trees that are standing in water to gain some protection from ground predators. Herons have benefited from the resurgence of beavers in New England, as beavers create new wetlands with lots of standing dead trees, perfect for Heron nests.  I've photographed nesting Herons on the beaver pond behind our house for several years and it appears a female Heron is sitting on the nest there now.
