GOLDFINCH GOLD - Male Goldfinch feathers are bright yellow at the tip (the part that is exposed) and bright white at the base. The way the feathers are arranged on the bird, the yellow tips of several feathers overlap. Some light reflects off the outer yellow feather surface of each feather, and light that passes through is reflected back out by the bright white of the feather bases. The feathers of a goldfinch essentially form a translucent yellow film with backlighting. (from David Allen Sibley - What it's Like to Be a Bird)
