TELL TAIL - Many species of birds have a habit of pumping or bobbing their tail and many possible explanations have been offered. A recent study found that the rate of tail pumping increased when (and only when) a predator was nearby. The explanation is that tail pumping is a simple signal, and the message it sends to predators is "I know you are there. I'm healthy and alert and you won't catch me, so don't even try." This Eastern Phoebe may have been pumping it's tail at me yesterday as it showed the yellowish belly it gets as Fall color.
