All birds molt - many birds molt once a year and simply replace their old feathers with a similar looking set. Goldfinches molt twice a year and change their appearance dramatically with the seasons. In late summer the Goldfinch grows drab feathers to camouflage it through the winter. Six months later, in the early spring, Goldfinches molt all their feathers (except wing and tail feathers) and males transform into the showy yellow and black colors they need for courtship.
