Woodpeckers are primarily insectivores and Sapsuckers, like this female Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, use a unique foraging technique of drilling "wells" in the bark of trees, then eating the insects that are attracted to the sweet sap. This female visited the "sapsucker wells" on our Mountain Ash tree repeatedly, collecting insects to take back to her young.
