POTD 5/9/20 WTF?

WTF? - We have been watching for the Hummingbirds return, and finally saw a male yesterday. He had to poke through snow to eat this morning. Hummingbirds show up within a couple of days of the same date every year. This is the first time they have had to sit in snow at the feeder.

HUMMER COLOR - The male Ruby-Throated Hummingbird that showed up a couple of days ago flashed his iridescent throat. The bright color is produced by the microscopic structure of the feathers' surface. The structure of the feather surface amplifies one color of light and the surfaces are angled so that they reflect that color in only one direction - straight ahead of the bird - that gives the bird an extremely direction signal, visible only to the object of his attention.

I read somewhere once that hummingbirds have such a fast metabolism that they are always within 6 hours of starving. Thank goodness for your feeders in this cold weather, there's a good chance they made the difference between life and death for these hummers!
