LOONY TUNES - A Common Loon preens on an area lake. Loons need at least one-third of a mile of open water to take off - and clean lake water (they hunt by sight). Acid rain, Algae blooms and silt from erosion run-off can make lakes unsuitable for nesting loons, but they seem to be able to overcome all of these challenges and populations are currently stable or increasing.

FIRST QUARTER MOON - The moon phase Monday night was a first quarter moon, with approximately 46% of it's surface illuminated. This phase occurs when the Moon is positioned so that a quarter of its face is lit by the sun, appearing as a half-illuminated disk in the sky.

CHERRY SUNSET - The large Cherry tree in our yard is always a good foreground for a colorful sunset. According to the AI response to a Google search: Sunsets are red because the sunlight has to travel through a much thicker layer of atmosphere to reach your eyes when the sun is low on the horizon - a process called Rayleigh scattering.

EXCAVATING - A female Pileated Woodpecker sends sawdust flying as she excavates for grubs in a dead limb. Pileated Woodpeckers primarily feed on insects, particularly carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetle larvae.
