TAILING IN - A female Hairy Woodpecker uses her tail to stabilize onto a swinging seed feeder. Woodpeckers use their stiff, strong tail feathers as a crucial third point of support, acting like a kickstand or a brace to help them balance and gain leverage.

GET COZY - We could all take a hint from our cat Bennie to curl up someplace cozy on a cold winter day.

EQUIPMENT DISADVANTAGE - A Chickadee attempts to get at the suet. Suet feeders are easier for birds with longer beaks, like woodpeckers, and Chickadees are more likely to be at seed feeders - but this Chickadee seemed to want the fat-rich suet, short beak not withstanding.

CREEPER - A Brown Creeper (Certhia americana), also known as the American treecreeper, forages among crevices in the bark on a maple tree trunk. Creepers mainly eat small arthropods found in the bark, but sometimes eat seeds in winter. Brown Creepers show up in our yard in winter from their breeding habitat - mature conifer forests in Canada.
