BACK FOR THE SEASON - Rose-breasted Grosbeak is back - right on schedule. Grosbeaks are highly migratory nesting across the US and Canada and wintering in Central America. About 19 percent of the world's bird species migrate every year. Migrants are able to nest in areas with reduced competition and a burst of abundant food making the migration trip worth the effort.
SEEDY - Male Red-Bellied Woodpecker taking seeds from a feeder...using his tail for leverage.
NEWLY HATCHED - Heron chick barely visible above the side of the nest on the beaver pond. Adult Heron standing at the side of the nest after sitting tight on it for a month is the give-away to watch for fuzzy chick heads to appear. Activity around the nests will get more and more intense as the chicks grow and need to be fed. I'll keep you posted as they grow. ;-)
TRICKY BIRDS - To keep their eggs and young safe from predators, ground-nesting birds like the Killdeer use camouflage and trickery...including laying their eggs on ground that matches their eggs' color and using a "broken wing act" to distract predators away from the nest. This Killdeer foraging on the edge of a farm pond in Rindge, NH.
